Korea Coast Guard, Protector of the Territorial Waters of the Republic of Korea

The insignia of the Korea Coast Guard is conceived from the white-tailed eagle designated by the ROK government as the Natural Monument No. 243 armed with the circular shield used by Korean warriors in the past. The white-tailed eagle armed with the traditional Korean shield symbolizes the mission of the Korea Coast Guard to protect the Korean people and their territorial waters and the bird's wide open wings mean a strong will of the members of the organization to offer devoted services to the ensure safety of the Korean people using their seas.

The large, wide open wings of the eagle, a fierce predatory bird which has long dominated the ecology along the coast of the Korean Peninsula, represents the reliable search and rescue capability of the Korea Coast Guard. The tri-colored Taegeuk, the symbol of the ultimate harmony of the universe, at the center of the shield, represents Korea and the Korean people while the surrounding eight trigrams the eight virtues devoted by the Korea Coast Guard, loyalty, trust, courage, humanity, righteousness, propriety, knowledge and moral excellence.

The six sections of the bird's tail feather symbolize the main duties of the Korea Coast Guard: protection of Korea's maritime sovereignty and marine resources; securement of safe maritime activities via improved safety measures; effective law enforcement on the coasts and seas; protection of marine environments and resources; provision of creative and dedicated services to boost maritime activities; and promotion of capability to support efficient use of marine resources. Between the tail and the hull of the ship, there's an image of the anchor which symbolizes maritime culture. Finally, the triangle formed by the tail represented the bow of a ship sailing on the seas on the three sides of the Korean Peninsula.

People's Trust and the Authority of the Korea Coast Guard

The three colors, red, blue and yellow, forming the core of the tricolor Taegeuk typically located at the center of the traditional Korean kite symbolize the harmony between the heaven, earth and humankind and, accordingly, the will and mission of the Korea Coast Guard whose priority is the safety of the Korean people on and around their territorial waters.

The symbolism of the insignia is characterized by the harmonious combination between the colors of the Taegeuk symbol representing both future orientation and transmission of the tradition and the yellow from the tail of the eagle as well as blue represents the sea and the guardian of the Korean territorial waters.

The insignia of the Korea Coast Guard representing the organization as the protector of the Korean maritime resources is based on the image of the white-tailed eagle, a rare bird designated by the Korean government as the Natural Monument No. 243, and the circular shield used by Korean warriors in the past. The traditional Korean shield and the large, wide open wings of the eagle represent the organization dedicated to the protection of the Korean people and the seas around their land.
